An artist residency at the Maison Flottante in May 2026.

Arthur Francietta is a Caribbean artist, graphic designer, typographer, and art director. Born in the heart of the Caribbean Sea, his work explores the intersections between indigenous arts, contemporary typography, and graphic design to envision possible futures. Each creation is an attempt to foster dialogue between cultures, territories, and eras, transcending geographical boundaries.

The artist’s career

A graduate of the École Estienne in Paris and a former resident at the Atelier National de Recherche Typographique (ANRT), FRANCIETTA has developed a practice that combines research, graphic divination, and typography. He has collaborated with international institutions such as the University of California, Berkeley’s Linguistics Laboratory, the Designlabor Gutenberg Institute, and the Pérez Art Museum Miami. He explores asemic writing and non-alphabetic graphic systems, particularly through the study of Haitian vévés, Cuban anaforuana, and Native American petroglyphs, which bear witness to the legacy of the Black Atlantic. This research also examines the concepts of graphic divination, a phenomenon linked to graphic and ritual practices that predate the invention of a writing system.
All of this fuels a reflection on writing, Caribbean identity, and the poetics of relationships, influenced by numerous Caribbean thinkers, notably Patrick Chamoiseau and Édouard Glissant. Arthur Francietta has designed several typefaces that embody this balance between archiving and rehabilitation, notably Medefaidrin (included in the Noto Sans collection on Google Fonts) and typefaces intended for research on Paleo-Hispanic scripts. He is currently developing an expressive typeface designed specifically for Creole, enriched with a collection of prehistoric Caribbean symbols. He lives and works between Martinique and Saint-Denis (Le 6b).

Maison Fleuve

As part of the installation of the cneai at the Maison Fleuve, Arthur Francietta is designing the overall signage for the new art centre. The first stage of creating this signage took place during a workshop for a group of children from the Frida Kahlo School of Arts in L’Île-Saint-Denis on 10 April 26, during the exhibition LE MILIEU at the Espace Longue Vue. These signage elements are scanned and reworked by Arthur, and will be incorporated into the process of conceptualising and creating the elements for Maison Fleuve.
