“By drawing on pop culture, colour and childhood, by knitting together fiction rather than history, Valentine Gardiennet raises the question of the seriousness of art and plays on the references that need to be mobilised in order to be a “great artist” in the same way as one becomes a “great person”. Titillating the condescension that adults often feel towards the world of children and teenagers, the only minority of which each of us has necessarily been a part and then left behind, serves to thwart the relationships of power and ascendancy that are forged throughout life, carried along by the never innocuous cultural objects with which we are built. But it wouldn’t be true to say that Valentine Gardiennet has kept her ‘childlike soul’, no: what infuses her work is adolescence, from which she has vowed to retain the taste for excess and the accuracy of intensity. ’
