The artist duo Jacent (Jade Fourès-Varnier, born 1984 in Paris; Vincent de Hoÿm, born 1984 in Narbonne) create large-scale installations inspired by domestic life, where visitors are welcomed as guests. Depending on the context, the duo adapt their multidisciplinary proposals, which could be described as “total art”. The fusion of art and life has been at the heart of their research since the start of their collaboration in 2014. They founded Tonus, a self-managed art space based in Paris, which perpetuates this state of mind.

Residency summer 2022

The Jacent duo, composed of Jade Fourès-Varnier and Vincent de Hoÿm, have developed a body of work in painting, sculpture and graphics. Their creations suggest ways of inhabiting the exhibition, allowing the public to become users of the installations. Sculpture and painting became spaces for conviviality, and were activated during meetings, meals, and various forms of occupation and reunion.
The residency culminated in an exhibition entitled “Don’t Push The River…” at SHED L’Académie. The exhibition is divided into three acts, celebrating collective, domestic and intimate life. The title of the exhibition, in two parts “Don’t Push The River…” and “…It Flows By Itself”, within the artist run space Rolabola, is a Chinese proverb and the title of a book by writer Barry Stevens, which is a classic of Gestalt therapy, a therapeutic approach focused on the constant interaction of human beings with their environment. It acts as a philosophical motto, a mantra to follow, and also refers to the course of the river, as an allegory of the artists’ journey, following the course of the Seine to get here.
